How Irene Gut Opdyke Began Helping Jewish Holocaust Victims

She eagerly accepted — and decided she would bring her Jewish friends from the laundry room with her. Irene Gut Opdyke was soon transferred to the town of Tarnopol, where she continued serving meals to German officers. There, she became friends with 12 Jews who worked in the laundry room washing the soldiers’ clothes. I had no idea how historical this area was and came away much better informed in a very accessible way.

The reopening coincides with the one-year anniversary of the nationwide shutdown resulting from the coronavirus. Dale Surowitz, CEO-president of the Jewish Home, says welcoming new seniors will enable the organization to continue its century-long tradition of providing for the region’s frail elderly. "The Jewish Home typically has wait lists for available spaces in our skilled nursing facility; it’s uncommon to have availability as we currently do," Surowitz says. Applicants to the Jewish Home have access to a broad range of programs and services beyond PACE and skilled nursing. Our Manhattan nursing facility is the only one in New York City staffed by full-time physicians and nurse practitioners, in partnership with Mount Sinai Health System.
In cooperation with Harrisburg Area Community College, we provide training for RN and LPN students. Subsequently, we often offer employment to those who meet our high standards for skills and caring attitudes.
